Hydrogen Production Process of Natural Gas Hydrogen Generation Unit

The process flow of hydrogen production from natural gas mainly includes four parts: feed gas pretreatment, natural gas steam reforming, carbon monoxide shift conversion, and hydrogen purification.

First is the feed gas pretreatment step, which mainly refers to desulfurization of the feed gas. In actual process operation, cobalt-molybdenum hydrogenation combined with zinc oxide is generally used as a desulfurizing agent to convert organic sulfur in natural gas into inorganic sulfur and then remove it.
Since the flow rate of feed natural gas is relatively large, a high-pressure natural gas source can be used, or a sufficient margin should be considered when selecting a natural gas compressor.
Next is the natural gas steam reforming step. In the reformer, a nickel-based catalyst is used to convert alkanes in natural gas into feed gas mainly composed of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
Then comes carbon monoxide shift conversion. Under the action of a catalyst, carbon monoxide reacts with steam to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide, forming shift gas mainly containing hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
According to different shift temperatures, carbon monoxide shift processes can be divided into two types: medium-temperature shift and high-temperature shift. Among them, the temperature of high-temperature shift is about 360 °C, and medium-temperature shift is about 320 °C.
With technological development, a two-stage process combining high-temperature shift and low-temperature shift has been adopted in recent years to further reduce resource consumption. However, if the carbon monoxide content in the reformed gas is low, only medium-temperature shift can be used.
The final step is hydrogen purification. Currently, the most commonly used hydrogen purification system is the PSA system, also known as Pressure Swing Adsorption purification and separation system. This system features low energy consumption, simple flow, and high hydrogen purity, which can reach up to 99.99%.
