Process of Methanol Cracking Hydrogen Production with Catalyst
2020.05.08
As a professional manufacturer of catalysts for methanol cracking to hydrogen, Suzhou Jiarui Gas hereby explains the detailed process flow:
After being mixed in a certain ratio, methanol and demineralized water are preheated in a heat exchanger and fed into a vaporization tower. The vaporized methanol‑water steam is superheated and enters the reformer, where catalytic cracking and shift reactions take place in the catalyst bed. The resulting reformed gas contains about 74% hydrogen and 24% carbon dioxide.
After heat exchange and cooling condensation, the gas enters a water washing absorption tower. Unconverted methanol and water collected at the tower bottom are recycled, while overhead gas is sent to a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit for purification.
According to different requirements for product gas purity and trace impurities, a four‑tower or multi‑tower (more than four towers) PSA process is adopted, with hydrogen purity reaching 99.9–99.999%. For a PSA unit designed for a treatment capacity of 1500 Nm³/h reformed gas and hydrogen purity of 99.9%, the hydrogen recovery rate can exceed 90%.
Carbon dioxide in the reformed gas can be purified to food grade via a PSA unit and used in the beverage and alcohol industries, greatly reducing production costs. In this process, carbon dioxide is first separated by a PSA unit, and the hydrogen‑rich reformed gas is then compressed and sent to another PSA unit for further purification.
