PSA oxygen generation units can produce oxygen with a purity as high as 93%. Some electric furnace enterprises worry that the relatively low purity of PSA oxygen cannot meet the requirements for special steel smelting. In fact, the front-end processes for special steel and ordinary steel smelting in electric furnaces are identical: adding ingredients into the electric furnace to adjust the steel composition, oxygen blowing for combustion support, and power-off oxygen blowing for decarburization to obtain the required steel grade. No oxygen blowing is required in the refining process. Therefore, the oxygen requirements for special steel and ordinary steel smelting in electric furnaces are essentially the same.
Oxygen produced by PSA contains approximately 3% nitrogen and 4% argon. Some electric furnace enterprises worry that nitrogen in the oxygen will affect the acceptance indicators of special steel. In fact, China has no clear regulations on nitrogen content in alloy steels used at room temperature, such as spring steel, bearing steel, and seamless steel tubes (and even fewer restrictions for ordinary steel).
Excessive nitrogen may cause nitrogen content to exceed the standard in low-temperature impact-resistant steels — for which China has clear requirements (e.g., ship steel and oil well casing steel must have nitrogen content ≤ 70 ppm). However, most domestic electric furnace steelmaking enterprises do not produce low-temperature impact-resistant steels. Therefore, PSA oxygen enjoys broad prospects in special steel smelting via electric furnaces.
Comprehensive data research shows that there is also extensive foreign practical experience in oxygen use for electric furnaces.
Praxair of the United States has conducted long-term research on electric furnace steelmaking, and its test results confirm that the use of PSA-produced oxygen in electric arc furnaces does not increase nitrogen content in molten steel.
Approximately 60%–70% of electric furnace steelmaking enterprises in Japan adopt PSA as their oxygen production method. To date, nearly 100 electric furnaces worldwide use PSA oxygen for steelmaking.
Long-term practice has also proven that oxygen produced by PSA fully meets the requirements of electric furnace steelmaking.
