Principle of Nitrogen Purification Unit
2021.03.10
Oxygen is the most abundant and harmful impurity in nitrogen. There are two main deoxidation methods:
Chemical deoxidation by carbon-oxygen reaction:
The deoxidizer acts as both catalyst and reactant. The reaction is mild, the process is simple and operation is stable.
Chemical deoxidation by hydrogen-oxygen reaction:
An appropriate proportion of hydrogen is added into nitrogen, and deoxidation is realized at room temperature under the action of a deoxidizer.
The reaction equation for carbon-oxygen deoxidation:
C + O₂ → CO₂
Carbon dioxide produced is a polar molecule that can be easily removed by adsorbents. The gas after deoxidation passes through an adsorption tower filled with adsorbents to remove impurities such as carbon dioxide and moisture, thus obtaining high-purity nitrogen.
The reaction equation for hydrogen-oxygen deoxidation:
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
The generated water is removed by a desiccant to obtain high-purity nitrogen.
The two methods have their own advantages.
The hydrogen-oxygen method features a mild reaction and can achieve deoxidation at room temperature, but it requires hydrogen supplementation, which brings potential safety risks and cannot be applied where no hydrogen source is available.
The carbon-oxygen method requires no additional media and is safe, but the deoxidation process must be carried out at 280 °C.
