Demand for hydrogen in refineries has increased sharply

2021.04.24
With the deterioration of crude oil quality and the accelerated upgrading of refined oil products, the demand for hydrogen in refineries has increased sharply, and reducing hydrogen cost has become an important development strategy for refineries.
Hydrogen is recognized as an excellent green fuel. Its combustion calorific value is 2.7 times that of gasoline and 3.5 times that of coal. At present, it is mainly used as the second/third-stage propellant for aerospace rockets.
Starting from the raw material sources involved in reducing hydrogen costs in refineries, and in accordance with the full hydrogenation process of refineries, this paper analyzes the factors affecting the production cost of hydrogen and its competitiveness by supporting the construction of independent raw material supply for hydrogen production units.
At present, research is being conducted worldwide on the application of hydrogen in daily transportation. Japan, in particular, is focusing on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles as a development direction, producing 300 to 400 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles each year. It plans to build 160 hydrogen refueling stations and put 40,000 fuel cell vehicles into operation by 2020.
At the same time, hydrogen is also an important industrial raw material and reducing agent, widely used in various fields of the national economy. It serves as a synthetic raw material for fine chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates and other industries, as well as a shielding gas for metallurgy, electronics, glass and machinery manufacturing.
Hydrogen is an indispensable and important raw material in oil processing.
With the deterioration of crude oil quality and the strengthening of environmental protection, fuel cleanliness standards have been continuously raised, and hydrogenation processes have developed rapidly. The demand for hydrogen in refineries has increased dramatically, making hydrogen the second largest raw material after crude oil. Seeking low-cost hydrogen sources has become an issue that refineries must consider.
